The 4pm ankle check, explained

Seven things worth knowing about heavy, swollen legs

01 — Your Legs Feel Heavy And Your Ankles Look Swollen. You Learned To Ignore It.

By the end of the day your ankles look puffy, your legs feel heavy, and your socks leave a deep ring pressed into your skin. You stopped questioning it a long time ago, but it happens because blood and fluid settle in your lower legs when you are on your feet, or sitting, all day.

That end-of-day swelling is exactly what these socks are made for. NYG uses 15-20 mmHg graduated compression, snug at the ankle and gently looser up the leg, to support your circulation and help reduce that heavy, swollen feeling.

Heavy, swollen legs at the end of the day

02 — It's Not Just The Swelling. It's The Dizzy Standing-Ups And The Cold, Tired Legs Too.

It rarely stops at swollen ankles. There are the head-rushes when you stand, the cold feet that never quite warm up, and the tired, heavy legs that make the evening feel longer than it should. Most of it traces back to sluggish circulation in your lower legs, where blood tends to pool instead of moving back up.

Graduated compression works with that. The gentle squeeze at the ankle helps encourage blood back up the leg rather than letting it settle, which is why so many customers tell us their legs feel less heavy and their feet feel less like ice by the end of the day.

03 — You Tried The Stiff Hospital Socks. You Wanted To Rip Them Off After An Hour.

Maybe you already own a pair of the beige, medical-looking ones. They dig in at the top, they itch, they feel like a workout to pull on, and after an hour you just want them off. So they end up in a drawer, and you go back to living with the swelling instead.

That is the gap NYG was made to close. The socks are knitted from a feather-soft nylon and elastane blend with no stiff cuff, so they are easier to pull on and comfortable enough to keep on all day, which is the only way compression actually helps.

Stiff, uncomfortable traditional compression socks

04 — The Swelling Isn't Random. It's Gravity And A Long Day, Working Against Your Legs.

Here is the part that is easy to miss. Getting blood down to your legs is easy, but sending it back up against gravity is harder, especially after hours of standing or sitting still. When that return flow slows, fluid lingers in your ankles and lower legs, and that is the puffiness you notice at 4pm.

Graduated compression is the simple answer to that. NYG socks are tighter at the ankle and looser towards the knee, so they gently encourage blood upward rather than letting it settle, supporting the circulation your legs are struggling to manage on their own.

The key features of NYG graduated compression socks

05 — Support That Feels Like A Hug, Not A Squeeze.

There is a reason so many compression socks end up unworn. If support feels like punishment, you stop reaching for them, and then they cannot do anything for your legs. Comfort is not a nice-to-have here, it is the thing that makes the compression work, because a sock only helps on the days you actually wear it.

NYG is built around that. You still get genuine 15-20 mmHg graduated compression, but in a soft, breathable knit that one customer described as a nice hug without squeezing the life out of her legs, so it is support you can keep on from morning to night.

06 — Easy To Pull On, Kind On Sensitive Skin, And Nothing Like Beige.

The practical stuff matters more than most brands admit. On a low-energy day, socks that fight you at the ankle are a real barrier, and rough seams or a biting cuff can be unbearable if you are sensitive to how things feel. Most medical compression ignores all of that.

NYG is designed the other way round. The smooth seams and soft, no-dig cuff are made with sensory needs in mind, they slide on more easily than traditional compression, and they come in bold patterns like Space, Floral and Shark, so support does not have to look clinical.

07 — 17,000+ People Buy These Because They Were Made By Someone Who Gets It.

NYG was started by someone who lives with a chronic circulation condition, and who was tired of compression that was stiff, itchy and depressing to wear. That lived experience is stitched into every pair, from the softness of the fabric to the choice to make them bright instead of beige.

The proof is in how people keep coming back. NYG holds a 4.7 out of 5 rating across more than 20,000 orders from over 17,000 customers, and every pair is backed by a 60-day returns policy, so trying them is genuinely low-risk.

BEST Compression socks

"These are the best compression socks, they are so comfy! I am very sensitive and I can't feel the seams or pattern at all. The compression level is perfect for me who gets dizziness and heavy legs by the end of the day. It's comfortably tight and makes my legs feel refreshed. I love the pattern too and got many compliments, especially for the Space ones too."

Before you decide

Is 15-20 mmHg strong enough for me?
15-20 mmHg is everyday, moderate compression, designed to help with heavy, swollen, tired legs and to support circulation through a long day. It is not meant to replace compression a doctor has specifically prescribed at a higher grade. If you have been told to wear a stronger level, please keep following that advice.
I have larger calves. Will one size fit?
NYG socks are one size and knitted to stretch, and they fit a wide range of calves comfortably. We would rather be honest than promise they suit absolutely everyone, so there is a size guide on the product page, and the 60-day returns policy is there if the fit is not right for you.
I am sensitive to seams and tight bands. What do they feel like?
This is the reason NYG exists. The fabric is feather-soft, the seams are smooth, and the cuff is designed not to dig in, so there is no tight band biting into your leg. Plenty of customers who cannot tolerate other compression tell us these are the first pair they can actually keep on.
How does the up to 3 pairs free offer work?
Depending on the bundle you choose, you can get up to 3 pairs free and save as much as £60. Mix and match the patterns however you like, so you have a fresh pair ready for every day of the week.
